Water Aerobics for your Fitness
Looking for a fun, low-impact way to exercise? Try water aerobics! Many YMCAs and gyms offer classes – even water aerobic kick-boxing classes!
“Water aerobics is an excellent way for people of all ages and fitness levels to exercise in an injury free environment,” said Nicole Benson-Reiff, Aquatics Director at the Chris-Town YMCA in Phoenix, Arizona.
Water aerobics is usually done in chest-deep water, while a fitness instructor leads the group from outside of the pool. You’ll do aerobic arm and leg movements and you may even “jog” through the water.
Unlike exercise on land, water aerobics places less stress on your body, which makes it a great exercise for just about everyone. "The water supports your body, causing less impact and strain on your muscles and joints," said Benson-Reiff.
And while you’re cooling off from the summer heat in a cool, refreshing pool, your body will be benefiting from a unique form of exercise.
“While you’re in the pool, you’ll exercise every muscle and joint in your body, all at the same time,” said Benson-Reiff. “ You’ll be increasing your flexibility, coordination, and strength and you’ll feel great.”
To learn more about water aerobics, call your local fitness center or YMCA and ask if they offer classes. To find a YMCA in your area, visit www.ymca.net.
